RESUMO

Deep venous thrombosis is a disease that occurs in deep venous system, with thrombi formation into a vein, and consequent vascular inflammatory reaction. This thrombus can determine partial or total vascular occlusion. It occurs mostly in the lower limbs and pelvis. Clinical presentation is usually acute, but may also be chronic with relapses. In most cases, limb disease is unilateral. In the present study, two different imaging techniques were used in the diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis: B-mode sonography with duplex color Doppler and magnetic resonance imaging with pedal vein administration of paramagnetic contrast media. Twenty-six patients, 47 lower extremities and 141 body segments were evaluated. Comparasion between techniques was made by vascular segments and body segments. The objectives of the study were to evaluate agreement in diagnosis between methods by vascular and body segments, interobserver reliability to read magnetic resonance exams, and sensibility, specificity and accuracy of duplex color sonography in relation to magnetic resonance imaging by vascular and body segments. In conclusion, there was a good correlation between ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging at common and superficial femoral vein segments, thigh perfurants, calf veins, posterior tibial, fibular and external iliac veins. There was a good correlation between techniques in the evaluation of thighs and legs, but not in the pelvis. There was a good interobserver reliability in the evaluation of vascular segments by magnetic resonance imaging. The sensibility of duplex color sonography in relation to magnetic resonance imaging was excellent in pelvis, thighs and legs; specificity and accuracy were high in thighs and legs, and low in the pelvis
