RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of pain and anxiety over the blood pressure of patients during emergency situations, whose were attended in the Dental Emergency Service of Piracicaba Dental School. One hundred and thirty nine volunteers were selected. Populational factors like gender, age and instruction degree were verified. During waiting for the treatment, these patients were submitted to the Anxiety?s Dental Scale of Corah in order to establish the degree of anxiety and to a Visual Analogue Scale to evaluate the pain degree before the dental treatment. The blood pressure and cardiac frequency (CF) were evaluated at five different moments: a) first: patient at the waiting room; b) at the dental chair (before the treatment); c) after the local anesthesia; d) ten minutes after anesthesia; and e) at the end of the treatment. Also, the execution of aspiration prior anesthesia, the kind of anesthesia and the anesthetic used were evaluated. All measurements were performed by the same examiner, which did not execute any dental procedure. The data were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis, Friedman or Mann-Whitney tests. The results showed that the anxiety and pain were not affected by age, but anxiety is affected by the patient?s gender (p<0.05). The anxious patients did not receive more attention from the operator than the non anxious ones (p>0.05). Also, it was not observed relationship between anxiety degree (Corah scale) and pain or anxiety related by patients. The anxiety degree was not considered by the operator in order to adopt anxiety control procedures. The local anesthetics with epinephrine and blocking injections were the most used, but aspiration was not usual (p<0.05). The cardiovascular parameters (CF and blood pressure) were not affected by the initial anxiety and pain degrees (p>0.05)
