RESUMO

The object of this study was to analyze the electromyographic (EMG) activity of right masseter, right temporal (anterior part) and suprahyoid muscles and relate it to vertical dimensions of the face in 17 males and 22 females Angle Class II, division 1 malocclusion subjects between 13,4 and 16,6 years old. The EMG recordings were made through bipolar active surface electrodes during the resting position, maximum dental clenching and maximum mouth opening. For the cephalometric analysis, an angular measurement and a proportional relation were used to quantify the face in vertical direction. The EMG and the cephalometric variables were compared between the genders and related to the vertical dimensions of the face. It was observed larger EMG activity in the male gender subjects in all muscles during all the situations, being statistically significant the difference in each muscle in maximum voluntary contraction. It was not observed correlation between the vertical dimensions of the face and the EMG activity in none of the situations. It was concluded that the EMG activity of the masticatory and suprahyoid muscles do not shows correlation with vertical dimensions of the face in Angle Class II, division 1 malocclusion.
