RESUMO

Three types of flood (Type A, B and Type C) and four homogenous groups of precipitation (I, II, III and IV) are recognized to the Ivaí River Basin. This paper dials with the analysis of flood regime considering the areal and temporal distribution of precipitation in the catchment basin. Matching flood types and precipitation groups it was possible to understand how each type of flood is controlled in terms of precipitation regime, rain distribution and the effective contribution of each sub-basin for flood regime and magnitude: Flood type A controlled by high precipitations in the head water and upper basin with gradate reduction along the middle and low basins; Flood type B is formed by high precipitation exclusively in the headwater area and moderate precipitation in the rest of the basin area; and Flood type C is formed by moderate to low precipitation in all entire basin. This methodology, ease to apply in other river basins, can be considerate a useful tool for river management especially in and flood control, regime of suspended sediments, agriculture and hydroelectric energy production.
