RESUMO
Ultrastructural cytochemistry of sex pheromone gland cells in abdominal tergites of Lutzomyia cruzi males showed the presence of large amounts of lipid inclusions, peroxisomes, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum profiles. In L. longipalpis it was demonstrated that these lipid inclusions appear in the gland cell cytoplasm about 9 hours after adult emergence, their number and size increasing with the insect age. Our data show that higher lipid amounts are stored in the 4th abdominal tergite, as compared with the adjacent tergites (3rd/5th). These lipids may represent a rich source of precursors for the biosynthesis of sex pheromones in L. longipalpis adult males. Analyses of tergal gland extracts, synthetic (1S,3S,7R)-3- methyl-α-hymachalene, and a synthetic mixture of all isomers of 3-metil-α- himacalene, were made by high resolution chiral capillary gas chromatography, coupled to electrophysiological recordings of the ascoid sensilla receptor cells in the antennae of males and females of L. longipalpis. These data, together with ethological studies made in a wind tunnel indicate that (1S,3S,7R)-3-methyl-α- himachalene derived from L. longipalpis males may present the dual function of both causing male aggregation and acting as sex pheromone to attract females. Our data also demonstrate that besides the ascoid sensilla present in the antennae, other sensilla with chemoreceptor function are present in mouthparts such as the labella and the maxillary palps.
