RESUMO

The design and construction of permanent magnet converter-fed electronically commutated machines of large power has been the subject of many studies and there are already some of these drives, with power of thousands of HP, in service. This kind of drive involves more phases than usuaUy found in "Brushless DC Drives", and uses different configurations for the power electronic converters. This work contributes to the development of the design, modeling, simulation and control of this kind of machine. The mathematical model inc1udes the effects of the damper cage, improving previously existing models. The design technique enables the calculation, by simple means, of the machine behavior from its basic dimensions (in the case of a magnetically isotropic rotor). Armature reaction effects are discussed qualitatively and quantitatively. The current controller is examined, comparing it against other technical choices. The experimental work was done in a machine of 100 HP. The modeling, design and simulation techniques were applied to the study of this machine, enabling comparisons. The contributions presented by this work give, first of all, a better understanding of this kind of machine. Next, they tum possible the study of other permanent-magnet machines, eventually with larger power rating
