RESUMO

Insulating materials subjected to electrical discharges deteriorate gradually and can lose their electrical characteristics along the time. This work investigates the effect of some insulating materials - low density polyethylene, poly (methyl metacrylate) and porcelain - in breakdown voltage atmospheric and, also, the effect of the electric discharges (induced by the impulse) on the performance of the low density polyethylene and porcelain. The experimental work was carried out with two electrode systems - parallel plates and point-plate within which the samples were inserted and subjected to electrical discharges. The samples were analised in an optical microscope. The time dependent changes in the polyethylene were monitored by infrared spectroscopy. The analysis of the results showed degradation and changes in the degree of cristalinity of the polyethylene and formation of a vitreous phase in the porcelain
