RESUMO

Objective: To find out dosage and response relationship between amount of cigarettes and depression while pregnancy and to correlate. Method: This is a transversal study, whose target population are pregnant women cared for in the largest-flow health service of Sistema Único de Saúde (United Health Care Service-SUS) in the city of Pelotas, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In order to evaluate depression, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was 13. At statistical analysis, Poisson Regression was employed. Results: Depression prevalence during pregnancy was of 21.2% and 19.3% of the women was smoking during the pregnancy. For this sample, the prevalence of depression was bigger when the women had more than 35 years of age (p=0.002), that hadnt finished Elementary School (p=0.000), that are not married or not live with partner (p=0.001), that werent in first pregnancy (p=0.000), and that had smoking (p=0.000). It was discovered that smoking women showed 1.72 (95% CI 1.27; 2.34) more probability of depression. Conclusion: There is a clear dose/response relationship between the amount of cigarettes smoked by the pregnant women and their depression episodes
