RESUMO

Along past years, the phenomena of intelligence and knowledge have been widely investigated, mainly within the scope of intelligent systems and their engineering applications. Despite an old tradition regarding the study of intelligent systems, this area is gaining a lot of new insights due to the association of its elementary questions to the study of semiotics, in this context, the use of a semiotic background introduces a solid and promising theory for the modeling of the representation and use of different types of knowledge in natural and artificial systems. The main objective of this dissertation, is to start a deeper study regarding the involvement between semiotics and intelligent systems. We do that by performing a detailed analysis of one of the most elementary kinds of knowledge in any intelligent system: sensorial knowledge - thus, summarizing the different ways by means this very primitive type of knowledge can be expressed. For this purpose, we analyze the different kinds of sensors used in artificial systems, focusing on the types of knowledge and information, processing being expressed, disregarding technological characteristics. At the end, we illustrate such an use by developing an application example m which sensorial knowledge is evidenced, showing how tins type of knowledge is transformed into other more sophisticated types of knowledge
