RESUMO

Integrality is one of the principles that sustain the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), the Brazilian national health system. Its constitutional text refers to an articulate, continuous set of preventive and curative actions and services, both individual and collective, at any level of complexity. It is the widest ranging principle in all the dimensions of the SUS. The objective of this study is to identify, analyze and understand the concepts of integrality in the work process of nurses working in an emergency unit. The subjects of the research are all the nurses working at the emergency unit of a private philanthropic hospital linked to the SUS. The study uses Charles Maguerezs Problematics Arch as the data collection method, developed over four encounters, and a qualitative approach for the data analysis. The first meeting was for the purpose of the welcoming the group. The second meeting considered the subjects observation of reality and raised some key issues. The third encounter focused on the theories and bases of the issues raised, and the last encounter was characterized by the raising of hypotheses to solve the problem. In the data analysis, several meanings emerged from the speeches about integrality: service to the human being as a whole and as a bio-psycho-social being, with integrality being broadly perceived as the result of interdisciplinary and intersectorial work and as a means of giving the patient services that will cater for all his needs. Despite the fact that the practice of this professional group is still strongly influenced by the biological model, the research identified aspects that tend to incorporate integrality in the services provided, using a system of referencing and crossreferencing the patients, with the aim of providing an integral, interdisciplinary and intersectorial service. The study group pointed out their satisfaction at having participated in the study, saying the encounters allowed them to exchange experiences and to reflect on the practice of nursing and the re-signification of knowledge that might bring changes to their behaviour and practice in the work process
