RESUMO

Since the last decade, the Brazilian banking sector has passed for a consolidation process from which resulted a significant reduction of the number of institutions in operation in the market. This study had as its main objective to identify the behaviour of banking concentration from June of 2000 to June of 2006, its correlation with the increasing profitability of the institutions in operation in the country and the level of efficiency in the period. As part of the methods and research procedures, three indexes of concentration had been used and also shaped a stochastic frontier profit function. As result, it was identified the growth of banking concentration and the correlation of this measure with firms profitability, which indicate the power market influence of these institutions. It was also standed out an increase of the operational efficiency of the remaining firms. The level that was reached, however, indicates a margin for management improvement without the need of costs addition in the offered products.
