RESUMO
The lack of knowledge about native fruit of Brazil results in the depreciation of our patrimony, represented by our biodiversity. Agriculture models, that promote the cultivation of exotic species through monoculture, has economic and ecologic effects, few sustainable, raising the risk of extinction of native species. The identification and characterization of biodiversity founded in our biomes, as well as the determination of its economic potential, are essential to the sustainable development of the country. The jelly palm (Butia capitata) is a palm that comes from South America. The yellow pulp of this fruit produces juice, jelly and liquor appreciated and traded by the population. The objective of this work was to determinate the carotenoids composition of jelly palm and its potential vitamin A value. The isolation and quantification of carotenoids were carried out by chromatography in magnesium oxide column / hyflosupercell and spectrophotometer. The total carotenoids mean concentration was 36.1 g/g of pulp. The β-carotene (16.1 g/g) was predominant in the jelly palm pulp composition, followed by the phytofluene (5.7 g/g), polycis-γ-carotene (4,7 g/g), phytoene (4.4 g/g) , and ), γ-carotene (2.9g/g), ζ-carotene and α-cryptoxantin (or zeinoxanthin) (0.8 g/g), γ-γ-carotene (0.7 g/g) e α-carotene (0.1g/g). High pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), without replica, was also utilized to confirm presence of all carotenoids in the jelly palm pulp.Considering the total composition of carotenoids found in the pulp of the jelly palm, the consumption of 100g of this pulp (146 RAE) will be able to supply around 40% of the daily needs of vitamin A for infants less than eight years. The high contents of pro vitamin A carotenoids found in this fruit pulp offer an excellent perspective in the sense of fight vitamin A deficiency in the regions with same climatic condition in the world.
