RESUMO

Biological materiaIs exhibit elastic and viscoelastic properties. The knowledge of these properties is important for the design and development of equipment applied in the harvesting, processing, transportation, conditioning and selection of fruits. This work made possible the development of a device capable of measuring espherical bodies mechanical properties a hundred times faster than usual compression tests. The device is capable of measuring the elapsed impact time through an infrared ligth signal connected to a microcomputer. By using that equipment it was possible to classify the espherical bodies which compared with the classification by compression it was 65% statisticaly similar and 2% statisticaly different. The compression test was carried out at selected load with 99,5% of the variation of the results explained by the Hertz contact theory, obtaining an average Firmness of 845 kPa. It was noted a tendency of orange of higher Brix exibting higher firmness and with a lower coeficient of restitution and a yellow color tendency
