RESUMO

Two experiments were carried out: in the first one there were utilized sugarcane plants of three varieties (NA 56-79, IAC 51-205 and CB 41-76) with different degrees of drought resistance, in the phase of intensive vegetative growth (ca 2 month old); the second experiment included plants of the variety NA 56-79, in the sucrose accumulating phase (culmmaturation) . Water stress to the plants was imposed by witholding irrigation, at times the plants reached the proper physiological age defined in each experiment. The patterns of recovery of the plants from water stress were followed with plants in the vegetative phase of growth. Estimation of nitrate reductase activity was dane in leaf tissue and invertase activities assays were carried aut in different plant tissues and organs, i.e. developing leaves (lamina) and mature lamina. and sheaths, and culm internodes throughout ontogenesis. The appropriate conditions for enzyme assays, in the particular tissues and argans, were established. Note: the complete abstract is avaiable with the full eletronic digital theses or dissertations.
