RESUMO

HUNTING BEHAVIOR AND ACOUSTIC REPERTORY OF THE DOLPHIN SOTALIA BRASILIENSIS (CETACEA: DELPHINIDAE)IN THE REGION OF CANANEIA,STATE OF SÃO PAULO,SOUTHEAST BRAZIL.Sotalia brasiliensis,a small dolphin of southeast coast of Brazil, was studied along 36 months, between 1982 and 1990,in the Estuarine-Complex of Cananéia (State of São Paulo),a region of high fertility, and characterized by mangroves. The data was obtained through naturalistics observations from the board of small boats or from a beach named Ponta da Trincheira. The school, composed by a familiar organization (with the average number of three animals) was the most frequent type of association among the dolphins. The hunting behavior resulted 11 postures and basic behaviors, and 12 sequential behavior. In a quantitative analysis of behaviors, differences were reported in frequencies among seasons, and after the participations of the young in the hunt strategy. Two groups of sequential behavior were obtained through the Tree Diagram. An association of sounds types emited and the behaviors of the dolphins, was made by acoustic analysis, yielded four vocal type?whistles, gargles, and shouts as a function of social communication, and clicks, in sequence of pulses for echolocation ? and two non vocal tpes ? the swimming and the ?surface burst?.The more frequent of them was the whistle. Thus, S. Brasiliensis in the region of Cananeia has a complex...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
