RESUMO

A comparison of KERN, TINKER and BELL s methods is relative to the thermal-hydraulic calculation of shell and heat exchangers without phase change, emphasis being given to the discussion about the pressure loss and the heat transfer coefficient for the shell side flow. The experimental results used are from 12 tested exchangers and were obtained in the literature; from the work by BELL and TINKER. The calculations were done by computer and the results were listed in tables. In order to facilitate the comparison, the ratio of the calculated and the experimental values of the heat transfer coefficients and of the calculated and experimental values of the pressure losses were ploted in figures, as a function of the REYNOLDS number, for each method. The results obtained with TINKER and BELL s methods were compared with tests done by the Heat Transfer Research, Inc., HTRI, a private research institution that usually doesn t publish results in the open literature. It is worthwhile mentioning that it was not found in the literature a comparison of KERN s method with other design methods or experimental results. It was also prepared a proposition for the design of the heat exchange surface for the kind of exchanger above mentioned. A computer program is presented and one example is analised, the results being commented. This work is purposefully presented in a didatic way, showing all the calculation steps for the heat transfer and pressure 10s5 by KERN, TINKER and BELL s methods, also detailing the design steps for the heat exchange surface area required for shell and tube heat exchangers, without phase change
