RESUMO

This study aims at investigating the collapsibility of coluvionar and lateritic soil by oedometer tests with controlled suction, performed in the laboratory, and by the interpretation of the soilimpregnated thin plates before and after the tests, so as to take into account the differences between natural and "after collapse" structures. The undisturbed soil samples submitted for testing were extracted from the pit shaft opened in the Foundation and Mechanics Soil Experimental Field of the State University of Campinas - Unicamp whose geotechnical profile shows a superficial layer of coluvionar origin, consisting of a porous, unsaturated and lateritic silty clay with an approximate thickness of 6.5m. The samples were characterized by geotechnical tests, through chemical and mineralogical tests and porosimetry tests. The oedometric tests with controlled suction were performed for samples from 1.5m, 4.5m and 6.5m depths, and the matric suction path values were 0kPa, 50kPa, 100kPa, 200kPa and 400kPa. Collapse Index values, about 12%, were found in the more superficial sample. The calibration of elastoplastic models, proposed by technical and scientific literatures, was carried out, based on the experimental results. Model, which best fitted each sample, was found. Structural models were proposed for the collapse of the samples and differences in the behavior for each of the samples were observed. The behavior of sample depth of 1.5m was influenced primarily by suction forces; the sample behavior at 4.5m depth was controlled by the presence of cementing agent, and for the sample at 6.5m depth, the behavior was characterized by the presence of more angular quartz grains
