RESUMO

The soil fertility and water availability are some of the many factors which controls the Cerrado biome vegetation and are in charge of a great diversity of phytophysiognomies that encompass fields, savanna or forest formations. The vegetal mass amount variation occurs according to the vegetation formations and takes its effects over the spectral signatures of the biome. This paper presents a Cerrado vegetation phytophysiognomic classification in the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, using combinatorics and adaptive indices applied in TM Landsat scenes. The methodology consists in: (a) pre-processing TM imagery; (b) elaborating a vegetation index via the possible up-and-down combinations band to band all along the reflectance spectral profile; (c) evaluating these combinations in order to form groups which characterize the targets; (d) analyzing each group separately, according to the most relevant characteristics that differentiate the group members; (e) mapping the vegetation unities applying the indices created according to the characteristics found, using high spatial resolution imagery to be compared with the ongoing classification; (f) Comparing the classes obtained in images acquired in different dates with each other. The result of the research was a map produced with six different vegetation classes. This map was developed using the wet dry seasons index variation obtained in the imaging time series. The proposed methodology has been proved to be suitable to the Cerrados phyto-physiognomies mapping. The greater constraints are those related to the differentiation between open woodlands or open riparian forests and the veredas.
