RESUMO

The SisBaHia model system was used to analyze the hydrodynamic circulation and the sediment transport potential on the coastal region of Recife and JaboatÃo dos Guararapes cities during the austral summer. In the first part of the study, the results of the hydrodynamic model were analyzed and compared with the experimental data gathered at sea with the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). To achieve that, 13 profiles perpendicular to the coast were traced, equally spaced in 1km and limited by isobaths of 15 meters. The resulting current vectors of the field campaign were calculated from the horizontal components of the currents for each tidal stage (low and high tides) and at three different depths (surface, middle and bottom of the water column). The comparative analysis shows that the model represented better the real situation in the surface of the southern and central areas of the modeled domain during low and high tides, respectively. These results are due to the more detailed bathymetry in these areas and to the depth of the water column for each tidal stage. . Afterwards, the numeric results were analysed. Those results showed that the currents were more intense on the more energetic tidal stages (flow and ebb) and on the southern part of the studied Ãrea, due to the strong influence of the JaboatÃo river. The lesser intensities happened during the full and low tides, as well as near the coast, over the submerged reef banks (shallow regions) and the current direction transiction areas. The surface current directions during flow tides were to SW. The other tidal stages (full, ebb and low tides) showed residue currents to NW on almost all the studied area, with current vectors to W near the estuary area (full and ebb) and SW (low tide). On the middle and bottom of the water column, the current directions during flow and full tides were to NW, SW and NE on the north, south and further east of the studied area, respectively. During low tide and ebb, the direction of the residue currens was NE (on almost all the studied area) and SW (on the estuary area). In the second part of the study, two Lagrangean transport simulations were made in Barra de Jangadas (continental and shore contribution). The plume of sediments remained on the modeled domain for almost two days, being transported mainly by the oscillatory movement of the tide
