RESUMO

The reason for the hydrotreating of petroleum fractions is to remove sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen and heavy metal, in order to stabilize the fractions by hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds. This process has become extremely important to attend the growing demand of low impurity fuel oils that has been created by society s desire to improve the environment quality and to achieve satisfactory products. In the middle distillates, like diesel, most of the sulfur is present in the form of condensed heterocyclic compounds such as benzothiophenes, dibenzothiophenes and benzonaphthothiophenes. As the feedstocks become heavier, the percentage of condensed sulfur heterocyclics increases faster than simpler compounds such as mercaptans and single-ring heterocyclic, which are relatively easy to desulfurize. In the same way, the fraction of middle distillates has nitrogen in the form of condensed heterocyclics, that requires more severe pressure and temperature conditions to remove that heteroatom ...
