RESUMO

The present study aims to evidence, starting from the analysis of the romance Cidade de Deus, of Paulo Lins, the contemporary aspects of the archaic and modern dialectics that constitute the dynamics of the Brazilian Literature. Therefore, by the presentation of the romance in the context of the contemporary cultural production, I discuss some particularities in the notion of contemporary aspects that allow us to articulate what is archaic and modern in this recent romance. In the sequence, I study properly what connects the urban literature of Cidade de Deus to the legacy of the regionalistic romance. I work with terminologies seemingly anachronistic, such as social banditry and regionalism, to propose, starting from Antonio Candidos review, in the built-in conceptualization in the term urban regionalism, the thought about the dialectics of the archaic and the modern in the contemporary aspects of Cidade de Deus.
