RESUMO

The values of chemical composition and metabolizable energy of 45 corn hybrids was determined in four trials with growing chickens (traditional method of total excreta collection). A total of 1,225 male chicks of 19 days of age were used, being 350 in trials 1, 2 and 3 and 175 in the 4. In the trials 1, 2 and 3 the treatments were 14 diets being 13 test diets with the corn hybrids and the reference diet. Trial 4 consisted of 7 treatments, being 6 test diets and the reference. The corn hybrids, in all the trials, replaced the reference diet in 40%. The experimental design was the completely randomized with five replicates of five birds per plot. The diets and the water were fed ad libitum for a 7-day period, being 4 days of adaptation and three of excreta collection. A percent variation of 32% in the crude protein â CP (7.79% vs. 11.45%, in the dry mather basis) was found. The values of gross energy (GE) presented a variation of 5.2%. The higher value observed were 4,668 Kcal and the lower value of 4,425 Kcal/kg. The average value of corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn) was of 3,744 Kcal/Kg, with a variation of 15.15% among the hybrids tested (3,405 to 4,013 Kcal/Kg). In spite of those hybrids presenting a variation in the AMEn, it was observed that the value of GE ranged 0.36%. This variation in the AMEn possibly is due to the coefficient of gross energy metabolization which was of 75% for the hybrid of lower AMEn and of 88% for higher AMEn. Despite of corn being a energy feed, the evaluation of its composition in CP is important due the considerable variation among the protein values of the different hybrids found at present, the same for energy values.
