RESUMO

Materials used as propant in hydraulic fracturing to improve production in oil wells must present properties that promote machanical stability of the fracture and sustain the flow of fluid from the reservoir through the fracture filled with the propant material. Due to diferent service conditions found in oil reservoirs, materials with different group of properties can be used with this finnality. The development of alternative materials is required to optimize peformance and minimize costs. This work reports the evaluation of some materials to be used as propants. They are: milled floor tile, granulated porcelanate, glass hollow beads and glass massive beads (used in the manufacturing of jewelry) and glass microspheres. These materials were evaluated according to tests previewed in specific API, ISO and ABNT technical standards. The results have shown that the glass microspheres satisfy the specifications stated by the standards, since it is recovered with phenolic resin, while the other materials eventually fail in some evaluation criterion, mainly in crash resistance.
