Methods: A review article on the techniques and devices for central venous access in newborns was written, in order to identify these features, utilizing MEDLINE and LILACS database (OPS/Bireme) and an original article in which two techniques, peripheral insertion and venous dissection, for carrying out this procedure through control and random clinical trial is compared. Results: The literature review has ascertained that the advent of new techniques and devices point that several aspects may hinder its success. However, the clinical trial showed no significant difference in either technique concerning the occurrence of complications which may compromise the catheter permanence
