RESUMO

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) that operates with formic acid as fuel (Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cell, DFAFC) constitutes a promising power source to be used in portable devices. In this context, this work aims to find efficient anodes to be used in this kind of system. All materials, based in Pt, Pb and carbon black were synthesized by the Sol-Gel method and, subsequently, physically characterized using X-Ray diffraction (DRX) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX). The Pt/C catalyst was also characterized by Transmission Electronic Microscopy (TEM). Electrochemical studies (cyclic voltammetry and cronoamperometry) were used to assess the catalytic activity of Pt together with different metallic oxides (MOX, M = Pb, Ru or Ir). From the experiments, it is possible to conclude that the PbOx/C anode starts the formic acid oxidation process at very low potentials, presenting also expressive values of current at these measured potentials. It is quite likely that the high catalytic activities are directly associated with the presence of Pb in the catalysts.
