RESUMO

The general objective of this research was to identify and discuss dimensions that affect marital satisfaction in dualcareer marriages. A demographic questionnaire, the Dyadic Adjustment Scale DAS (Spanier, 1976) and a episodic interview were used to collect data with five heterosexual, middleclass, dualworker couples. All participants had either college or secondary level education. The results show that dyadic consensus regarding the philosophy of live play a fundamental role in structuring the relationship. Time, finances, family of origin issues, gender issues are also variables that play an important role in marriages. We found that men and women base their selfevaluation of their marriages in concepts and values that are related to both traditional and new models of relationships. The traditional model still has a strong influence on individuals perceptions of the relationship and choices of gender roles. There are gender differences in the way men and women perceive and evaluate the various dimensions of marital life and in the strategies they develop to help ensure marital quality. Familywork dilemmas have a negative impact on many areas of the relationship. They affect sexual life: couples report tiredness; diminished or lack of sexual appetite; lack of time to have sex; and frustrations with the partner that may raise interest in extramarital sex. They generate conflict in the domestic division of labor and in strategies devised to care for and raise children. They underline conflicts partners have regarding the amount of energy and time they should invest in work and family activities. They also affect the individuals state of humor. Some of the participants reported feelings of aggressiveness, irritation, lack of control and profound sadness. Couples have difficulties in establishing a clear relationship between their conflicts and the challenges of the genderworkfamily interaction. Both men and women tend to take a self and/or relational perspective underestimating the impact of social, cultural and economical processes on marital life. This study invites researchers and clinicians to broaden their view of the marital interaction, include the interaction between gender, work and family as fundamental to the understanding of the marital satisfaction of contemporary couples.
