RESUMO

Introduction: Dental caries in childhood has been a field of interest among researchers. The understanding of their causal factors, as well as the relationship among them is essential to its prevention and decrease of its occurrence. Objective: To accomplish a literature review on determinant factors of children dental caries and to present the results of a research about caries frequency and the associated factors of its severity in children from a public school in Recife. Methods: A literature search was conducted about determinant factors of dental caries at databases LILACS, SCIELO and MEDLINE, using as key words: dental caries, early childhood caries, caries determinants, oral health. The study design of the original article was cross-sectional with an analytic retrospective component to verify the relationship between dental caries and socioeconomic factors, maternal quality of life and hygiene habits. Results: The searched studies showed the importance of the associations between caries and, socioeconomic determinants, emphasizing among them, family income and maternal education, quality of life, foods with high content of sugar, and the lack of encouragement of breastfeeding. Also, there were no preventive programs allowing an adequate hygiene and finally, host biological factors. Our research observed higher frequency of caries among children whose mothers did not receive any oral hygiene orientation during prenatal care, when infant complementary feeding was offered at night and with high levels of sugar, and there was not any kind of oral hygiene after this diet, when first dentist appointment was after fours years old and when the cause of this appointment was due to pain, bleeding or traumatism. Conclusion: The prevention and reduction of caries would be feasible with the understanding and control of the determinants studied in this research, being important the professionals formation, not only interested in curative proceedings, but also in oral health promotion
