RESUMO

With the increasing use of the rocks as dimension stones, the necessity of an adequate technological characterization of these materials becomes necessary. This work presents the results of a technological characterization of eighteen Brazilian rock types commonly used as dimension stones. The test were carried out according to Brazilian and American standards (ASTM) and encompass physical characterization; uniaxial compression strength; impact strength; traction strength determination at bending tests; uniaxial compressive strength after freezing and thawing cycling; wave velocity. For five rock types previously selected, rock samples were submitted to chemical attack, with three different substances. Thin sections of these rock types were also analyzed. Only the results obtained for the rock type named Piracema White satisfy the suggestions by ASTM (1999) and FRAZÃO &FARJALLAT (1995, 1996). Chemical attack for all rock types tested has shown changes both into physical appearance and into mechanical and physical properties. Dark minerals (biotite) were the most attacked during cycling with acid solutions.
