RESUMO

The Productive Local Arrangement (PLA) of confections of Pernambuco is located in a region of water limitations, produced around 15 % of the pieces of jeans of the country, where it is also are carried out the activity of washing and dyeing. The demand for water is around 50 to 300 thousand liters month, caught in the Capibaribe river, the unique source of water in the region. The physical-chemical processes (coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation) are used in the laundries as a treatment of wastewater generated. We studied three laundries (small, middle and large size) of Toritama-PE, there were collected samples of raw water used by the industries, equalized effluent and treated effluent. The collections were made biweekly, during 3 months and a half, in the rain season. The raw water analyses indicated that the water does not comply with the limits for his framing like river of fresh waters class 2. The parameters examined indicate the effluent leaving the waste water treatment plant with concentration levels out of the allowed for discharge for pH. The characteristics of the treated effluent are as related with the quality of the additives and type of process of the laundry. The parameters of the effluent should be appropriate to the legislation. This can be achieved with the improvement the operation of the treatment plant and the subsequent introduction of a complementary biological treatment. The reuse must be stimulated to reducing the costs with acquisition of the water and the environmental impact with effluents discharges.
