RESUMO

The use of solar collectors, flat-plate or focusing, is growing fast. The use of plastic materials is becoming more popular, more particularly in the use of fiberglass reinforced polyester. How ever, little is known about the limitations of the material with respect to the outside exposure. The purpose of this work is to characterize fiberglass reinforced polyester with respect to optical properties (transmittance) and mechanical properties after exposure to accelerated ageing as measured in the laboratory. In this work two comercial polyester resins were used: one for outdoor use, one with high transparency, without prepared to stand climatic conditions, the other for general use characterized by good mechanical properties. After a study of the optical and mechanical properties before and after exposure to the Weather-Ometer for different times, the characteristics of each resins were determined. With this data it is possible to decide which is the most adequate type of resin to be used as transparent cover, not only in solar collectors, but also in other applications with outside exposure
