RESUMO

Variations in age and sex distribution as well as FAB types have been reported for acute leukemias in several countries. We studied the demographics and response to treatment in AML and ALL between 1989 and 2000 in Terezina- Piauí ?Brazil and compared those results with other reports from Brazil and other countries. Complete data from 345 (230 ALL and 115 AML) could be reviewed. AML occurred predominantly in adults (77%), median age=34 years, similar to those found us southeast of Brazil but lower than in USA and Europe. FAB distribution was similar in children and adults and FAB-M2 was the most common type as also found in Japan. The high frequency of FAB-M3, described in other regions of Brazil and Latinos in USA was not observed. Overall survival for adults was 39%, similar to those found in Campinas or Belo Horizonte. However, a high mortality in AML group during induction was observed in Terezina. No clinical or hematological parameter influenced survival in the Cox Model. ALL presented the characteristic incidence between 2-8 years. Most of analyzed the cases were CD10+ pre-B ALL. In 255, abnormal expression of myeloid antigens was observed. Only 10% of the patients were >30 years old. Overall survival was better for children. Age and leukocyte count were independent prognostic factors. These data demonstrate that although there are regional peculiarities in acute leukemias in Brazil, the applications of standardized treatment and a good supportive care make it possible to achieve results observed in other countries using similar chemotherapy protocols
