RESUMO

The clinical intra-oral and panoramic radiographic findings of 107 clinically edentulous patients were studied before complete denture treatment. Also, salivary flow, Candida counts and species, presence of denture stomatitis and salivary anti-Candida IgA values were compared before and 6 months after the introduction of the new complete dentures. Clinical and radiographic findings were founded em about 30% of the patients, some of them interfering with the treatment, claiming for previous management. Salivary flow values were similar in all age groups, but lower in females. Salivary Candida counts were raised in patients with reduced salivary flow, in females and in those with insatisfactory denture hygiene. About 80% of the patients were Candida carriers in both examinations, and C. albicans was responsible for 73 % of the species. Almost 92% of the patients were complete denture users in the first examination, 54% of them showed denture stomatitis. Six months after the introduction of new dentures, only 16% of the patients showed denture stomatitis. However, the number of Candida carriers of the first and in the second examinations were similar, showing that although we have obtained clinical improvement in most of the cases, the denture stomatitis recurrence potential remained high. It was not obtained positive correlation between the values of salivary anti-Candida IgA and salivary Candida counts and presence of denture stomatitis
