RESUMO

The objective of this dissertation is to provide a contribution to the analysis of the historical development of capitalism in Brazil. For this purpose, will be examined the standard of the formation of land market and the labor market around the coffee production in São Paulo between 1850 and 1930. First, there will be a review of the conditions that led to São Paulo coffee economy to achieve the role of main dynamic center of Brazil during the nineteenth century. Also important in this process was the new dominant class fraction that arises within the Sao Paulo coffee economy which is distinguished by a greater possibility of direction of economic issues and a strong influence on Brazilian political arena. Subsequently, we seek to understand the pattern of land appropriation in the ¿oeste paulista¿ from the Land Law of 1850 in a coffee culture expansion situation. This process was influenced by the extensive standard of agricultural expansion, which was a legacy of Portuguese America. It appears that this law did not have a significant application in São Paulo due to the actions of the leaders of the coffee capital on three fronts: violence against small landholders, peasants and indigenous communities; fraud and falsification of property titles; and the direct influence in public positions. Thus, the fact is that the land appropriation by taking possession continued playing an important role in the areas of large coffee company in Sao Paulo, distorting the functioning of land markets in the manner prescribed by the Land Law of 1850. Finally, we seek to clarify the role of the leaders of the coffee capital in immigration policy, with clear preference for the arrival of non-owners immigrants who became immediately available workforce for the coffee capital. It is important to note that the territorial monopoly obtained by the coffee capital played an important role in the configuration of labor relations that prevailed in the "oeste paulista" from the massive European immigration in the late nineteenth century
