RESUMO

Cancer diagnosis is a stressful moment to the individual and his family, mainly because it includes prejudice, losses, personal and social values. Social expectations determine how men and women must behave when facing not only disease, but also physical and psychological pain. It is understood that the choices concerning the coping skills are directly related to the psychosocial adaptation. Once the treatment modifies the psychosocial dynamics, most of the time the individual is not able to accomplish the established tasks, causing a cascade of emotional and psychological reactions, which are associated to the beliefs and patterns of behavior, inhibiting the patients active participation on his treatment. In the present study, gender and the choice of the coping strategies are described and analyzed, taking into consideration diagnosed prostate cancer men and diagnosed breast cancer women. It is a qualitative research using a semi-structured interview as its instrument
