RESUMO

This is a report of a case study focusing the development of the understanding of the written language by a child with Down Syndrome. The starting point of this investigation was the believe that each individual presents a unique developmental process, which may be instigated beyond the limits that seem to be imposed by both genetical and social conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to describe and characterize the developmental process of a child with Down Syndrome as she progressed towards the understanding of the writing system. Special attention was given to identify the elements, which might be useful for supporting the intervation of a mediator who might lead the child along this process. The child was 9 years and 5 months old at the begining of the investigation. The study was based on the Piagetian psycogenetical perspective, which underpins the work of Emilia Ferreiro. In addition to the informal talking with the childs family and carers, the researcher acompanied the child as he performed the rotine activities in the childhood education setting he used to attend. This added up 42 four hours meetings, totalizing 168 hours of interaction between the researcher and the child. These meetings included 19 sessions of variable duration, specificaly planed to provoke the learning of the written representation. Nine sessions (adding up 64 minutes) were taperecorded, as a mean to help the researcher to remind her talk with the child. The material analysed in this study comprised the field notes included in a diary and the transcripts of the tapes. In spite of the limited time when the interactions between the researcher and the child were centered on the learning of the written representation, some relevant progress towards the understanding of the stability and functionality of the scripts was observed. No relevant differences were observed when comparing the developmental process of this child with what has being reported about the developmental process of children with no educational special needs.
