RESUMO

The purpose of this work was to develop software to obtain Vegetation Index products for South America through images of the NOAA polar orbiting satellites, using the SITIM image processing equipment. Input data are the AVHRR sensor imagens in the visible (0.58 - 0.68 ) and near-infrared (0.72 - 1.1 ) spectral bands with 1.1 km spatial resolution reveived by INPE/Cachoeira Paulista, SP, and also the corresponding orbital parameters of the NOAA satellites. The following final products were produced: a) a digital Normalized Difference Vegetation Index - NDVI mosaic image with 1020 x 1024 pixels and 5 km spatial resolution covering the continent between 0 and 45 degrees South and 32 and 77 degrees West over a period of 15 days; b) graphs showing temporal variations and listings of NDVI for places of interest. The main programs developed were those for direct image navigation (finding geographical coordinates for NOAA/AVHRR image pixels) and inverse navigation (opposite calculation), for production of digital mosaic images, for combining images and maps with political boundaries, and to produce NDVI for areas of interest. Structured Analysis technique was used to support the software development. The results, considered as tests with 1988 images, indicated that the objective of the work was accomplished. Other AVHRR useful applications based on the navigation software can also be derived, such as biomass burning, sea surface temperature and cloud monitoring. Considering the current use of the SITIM in Brazil, it is possible that this work will have numerous uses in the near future for regional and continental studies.
