RESUMO

This thesis aims to show how lectures about territoriality constitute elements in the construction of an identity. Based on several typologies of communication (such as maps, letters, paintings, reports, books, school lectures, atlases, poems etc.). We will put spatial dimension in evidence and argue how the fundament of localization had been considered in the construction of the idea of place and the feeling of belonging. In an historical approach linked to the formation of Brazilian, we reviewed the European expansion around the world and the lectures produced about this new territorial order. This development tries to assess the discourse produced in the process of territorial appropriation performed by the Europeans in America. Following this, we analyzed Portuguese politics, in the organization of the productive expansion process, and how it was directed towards territorial arrangement. After that, we highlighted the importance of ranking topics comprehended in repeated speeches about the process of construction the Brazilian imperial State. Using this understanding, we noted the introduction of Brazil in a global context at the beginning of XX century, at first we emphasized how spatial dimension was a repeated subject within speeches about the country of the future, after that, we included a discussion about the scope of Geographical Science, and by that we showed a conceptual articulation, which we had prioritized before, to demonstrate the way in which speeches about Geographical Science were the foundation of the idea of Brazil and of aspects of being Brazilian. We concluded our thoughts indicating that, in the process of the construction of an identity, which is specified, and the other discourses about this phenomenon, implicate another dimension between us and others. This axis makes clear the displacement of this discussion of the individual to the action. To reflect on how these geographical lectures are formulated, is to analyze and to systematize the tools which help us reveal and assemble the ideas which define the individual
