RESUMO

This dissertation is an effort to produce an analysis of rumours in telematic networks attempting to establish relations between the nature of this form of social interaction,its dynamics of propagation and the specific characteristics of the phenomenon in cyberspace. The study departs from a critical examination of different definitions of rumors in sociological literature and from an overview of its modes of propagation before the emergence of digital networks. In a second moment, the analysis centers on the use of internet as an environment for the production and dissemination of rumors.A comparison is finally established between the traditional and the digital forms of rumors, in an attempt to identify continuities and ruptures within the new situation of interaction created by digital/ telematic networks.
