RESUMO

The presence of biotin in lakes, rivers and sea and the difficulty in obtaining biologically active biotin by chemical synthesis motivated the search for new methods of synthesis. At present biotin can be obtained by fermentation with Esporoboromyces. In this bibliographic investigation the possibility of production of biotin in facultative lagoons receiving potatoes industrial waste is considered. The wastes are first stabilized by oxidation and then fermented by various microorganisms with production of biotin and other vitamins of the B complex. The Escherichia Coli group and specially Aerobacter aerogenes produce biotin and in this process they arc in association with the alga Chlorella vulgaris and the purple sulfur bacterium Tiocapsa floridana that stores most of the vitamin (biotin) produced in their cells.
