RESUMO

This work is about the reproductive biology and the early development of the tree species from brazilian cerrado Qualea cordata (Vochysiaceae) . Some aspects about the fenology of the species were observed. The seed dispersal occured by the end of July and the beginning of August, when the leaves were falling down. During the dispersal time it was possible to observe some new leaves growing up. The flowering time was in October and November, when the fruits were at the beginning of their development. These ones reached the maturity only in July of the following year. The species showed to be self-incompatible with a late acting self-incompatibility system. In all fruits observed there were much more inviable seeds than the viable ones. These last ones were always localized at the proximal part of the fruits. The early development of the plants was investigated considering the adition of nutrients to the growing soil and the use of soils from two different cerrado regions and a forest region. The seedlings were not expressively favored by the large disponibility of nutrients. This indicates some adaptability rate to the natural conditions of the environment where the species naturally occurs (the dystrophic soils of cerrado formations). The slow rates of development were related to the small contents of the RUBISCO enzyme in the young leaves which were compared to the ones in Esembeekia leiocarpa, a tree species that tipically occurs in the forest formations. The variation levels between the samples in the experiments turned difficult the conclusion about the effete of the treatments. Nevertheless, it is always expected when the analysed species is not a cultivated one. The genetic variability is required for the evolutionary process which Q. cordata is probably suffering. In the work, it is showed that, to minimize the variation it would be necessary to increase the number of samples, what would turn the experiment fisically inviable
