RESUMO

This dissertation analyzes the memory conflicts that are present in the commemorations of the deaths of Fausto Cardoso and Olímpio Campos, in the period between 1906 and 2006. The antagonistic group political leaders, Fausto Cardoso and Olímpio Campos, were assassinated following a rebellion that occurred in Sergipe in 1906. Since then, faustistas and olimpistas undertook concurrent projects to establish their leaders memories. The following is recorded, among the homages that were part of the mythification process of the two politicians: the funeral services, the civic pilgrimages, the press discourses; the reproduction and distribution of their pictures; the attribution of their names to public parks and the inauguration of their monuments. The greater part of these homages is repeated every year during the commemoration of their deaths. An analysis is initially made, of the ways in which they were represented in the historiographic production about the rebellion and also in the biographical narratives, with the intention of understanding the posthumous images which were built around the persons of Fausto Cardoso and Olímpio Campos. A memory history then follows, identifying the changes which the commemorations went through over time and also the inflection points that marked their memory services. One notes, that the services had unequal intensities and recorded memories which also had different meanings. The person of Olímpio Campos remained associated with a conservative line in Sergipana politics, so much so, that Fausto Cardoso became a symbol of freedom conflicts.
