RESUMO

This study aims at investigating the process of urbanization developed by the elite group in the city of Bahia during the seconde half of 19th century and the first half of 20th century, in order to understand the structure of the city at the beginning of the 21st century. Such process was encouraged by a modernizing speech that, by means of the implantation of one policy on social control, searched for implementing the prevention of diseases, the intervention in the physical structure of city and the development of a campaign for regulating the use the public spaces as well as the private ones by the city inhabitants, specially, by the popular social classes.. Then, the capitalist space begins to be produced by the new social relationships, in the movement of life, nature and artificiality, mainly, in the process of construction of representations on the dominion over the urban area. The production of the space has therefore constituted an essential tool for the thoughts and the actions concerned with the production and reproduction of capitalism. In addition to the means of production, the space has also represented a resource for control, domination and power. Similarly to other Brazilian and European cities, the production of the urban space in the city the Bahia used to follow more and more the parameter of social segregation, in which the elite groups, stimulated by the modern discourse, determined its conformation in such a way that it has clearly excluded the popular classes.
