RESUMO

This Thesis dedicates itself to the study of a particular process of communication: the construction, in discourse, of a significant whole from autonomous texts that can be associated. In this context, there are two levels related to the messages structure: one level is the local independency of the associated fragments, the other one is the global cohesion resulting from their union. Choosing as its concern such communicative process, this research has as objective to find its detailed demonstration in printed media and hearing process that are both related to the musical code. Hence, pedagogical works by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin (18101849) are examined: the two books entitled Das wohltemperirte Clavier, composed by the former, and the Etudes op. 10, Etudes op. 25, and Three new etudes, composed by the latter. The Thesis hypothesis is that of manifestation of the above-mentioned communicative process in those five groups of compositions. Its justification resides in the fact that no other author has examined such hypothesis previously. The main foundations of this research are subthematicism (C. Dahlhauss concept devoted to tenuous discursive kinships among different segments), metalinguistic function (according to R. Jakobson), aural and visual experience of counterpoints non-verbal message (studied by C. Rosen), and some considerations on the Baroque suite (by R. Gauldin and D. Fuller). The adopted methodology consists of bibliographic exam and analysis of the compositions. The texts argumentation is divided in three main sections: the first is centered on the first composer and his discourse (Chapters 1 and 2); the second does the same with the other composer (Chapters 3 and 4), and the third establishes discursive relations between them (Chapter 5). In particular, it should be emphasized that the first section also challenges the usually adopted translation to Portuguese of Das wohltemperirte Clavier (O cravo bem temperado), which erroneously restricts both Bachian books to one single media. As result, the hypothesis was confirmed and each group of compositions was proved to generate a significant whole from autonomous parts, which are associated by abstract and fragmentary articulations. Therefore, the term conjunct discourse was proposed to describe the observed process. In addition, the metalinguistic function was determined in Bachs two groups of works and in Chopins op. 10 and op. 25, as the musical code is emphasized essentially and precisely at the global level of each one of these collections
