RESUMO

This study had as objective to verify the sensitivity of the transabdominal ultrasonography to estimate the prostate dimensions in dogs comparing the results gotten with the biometry of the gland with the dimensions at the postmorten study. It was also intended to verify the eventual influence of the age and the corporal weight on the prostate measures and to establish the frequency of the main prostate pathologies for the anatomopathologic study. Thirty five dogs had been randomly selected and they had been submitted to the transabdominal ultrasonography, using a linear transducer 7,5 MHz, occasion where they had gotten the measures length (C), depth (P) and width (L) in the plans longitudinal and transversal. After accomplishment of the postmorten study, these same prostate measures had been gotten allowing the comparison between them. All the animals were intact male dogs, with age varying between one and 16 years, with average of 7,1 4,7 years. This study demonstrated that the transabdominal ultrasonography method was efficient to estimate the prostate size. The statistical analyses had demonstrated positive correlation between the prostate dimensions and the age of the animal, however this relation was not demonstrated with the corporal weight (p≤0,05). The more frequent prostate illness had been the benign prostate hyperplasia (43,75%) and prostatitis (31,25%).
