RESUMO

In despite of the metrological evaluation of the measurement uncertainty have been internationally standardized (ISO-GUM, 1995) since the mid of the nineties, only now it?s getting popular in the industries, technical and engineering schools. In some fields like dimensional metrology it is advanced, while in others like in the process measurement industries like flow, temperature and pressure is still in an intermediate phase. One of the main barriers to this popularization is the lack of standardized nomenclature used in the technical data sheets of the measuring instruments, where is claimed, for example, 1% accuracy without defining whether is of the reading, span or upper range limit or even without defining the coverage probability. This paper enters into this scenario with the pretension of clarify and simplify this concept, starting with the historic and evolution of the thinking which transformed the uncertainty in a quantitative variable with it?s evaluation done in a standardized and internationally accepted way. Following is done a summarized description of the ISO-GUM method and also is unveiled the entangled play of words and formulas stated by instrument manufacturers. With the grasp of these concepts we begin start carrying out two worked examples of the metrological evaluation of flow metering uncertainty by renowned instrument makers. In the first example making use of an orifice meter and in the second one a volumetric flow meter, where the main components and sources of uncertainties are identified and quantified. The analysis and visualization is done through Excel curves and spread-sheets.
