RESUMO

The experiences and methodologies that characterize the functioning and the social mode of institutional assessment are crossed in Brazil and in the world, due to different tendencies. The aim of this work is to present the main tendencies in institutional assessment of the brazilian higher education and its features from a methodological point of view. Its aims to show that these tendencies, designed from the 90 s on, are related to the so called identity crisis of universities as institution. This crise can be visualized from several perspective. Here, it is meant to be seen as an old but current problem between the relation teaching, research and extension. For this, it presents the university reform of 1968 as a background, through the report of the working group created by the decree 62.937/68 and some documents produced by the ministry of education and sport, as well as the document for the discussion of higher education assessment (1996) and the basic document for the national courses examination (1997)
