RESUMO

The monomeric methyl methacrylate can cause tissue damage. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of microwave heating and hot water on the residual monomer levei of an acrylic resin chemicaly activated and chemicaly polished and their effects on the transverse strength and internal microhardness. F our groups with specific patterns to each test were prepared using JET CLASSICO, an autopolimering resin. G 1) the specimens were mechanicalypolished; G2) the specimens were chemicaly polished using POLI-QUIM, a chemical polishing fluid; G3) after the chemical polishing, the specimens were submited to an aditional cicIe in the microwave oven irradiated at 450 Watts for 3 minutes; G4) after the chemical polishing, the specimens were submited to an aditional cicIe into water at 65°C for 1 hour. The means and standard deviations of residual monomer lost into water at the 1 st day were (flglcnf): Gl=136.65 :t 45.56 (a), G2=1315.70 :t 225.50 (b), G3=848.21 :t 150.46 (c) e G4=295.18:t 81.67 (a). The means and standard deviations oftransverse strength were (MPa): Gl=78.15.:t 6.11 (a), G2=65.15 :t 7.79 (b), G3=70.48 :t 2.96 (b) e G4=67.54 :t 8.05 (b). The means and standard deviations ofinternal microhardness were (Knoop): at 100 flm - Gl=14.71 :t 1.07 (a), G2=12.79 :t 1.54 (a), G3=12.90 :t 1.07 (a) e G4=11.69 :t 2.51 (a); at 700 flm Gl=16.04:t 0.96 (a), G2=15.43 :t 0.69 (a), G3=15.31 :t 0.74 (a) e G4=18.07:t 0.53 (b); ~t 1500 flm - Gl=16.21 :t 1.40 (a), G2=15.83 :t 0.70 (a), G3=15.56:t 0.72 (a) e G4=18.85 :t 0.73 (b). The results of anlysis of variance and the means comparison using Tukey test showed diference between the groups. The means folowed by diferent letters showed significant diference (a=5%). It was conclude that: quimical polishing increased the leveI of residual monomer; decreased the transverse strength of acrylics; did not change the values of internal microhardness; microwave and hot water can be used to reduce the levei of residual monomer at the 1st day.
