RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate in situ evaluation the effect of ferrous sulfate solution-containing mouthrinse on the reduction of the erosive action and synergistic effect between erosion and abrasion, in human enamel and dentin specimens, when exposed to a soft drink (Coca-cola®). The study was performed in two crossover stages, with 5 days each (SB- without and CB- with mouthrinse). Ten volunteers used palatal appliances with 6 enamel and 6 dentin blocks, arranged in three horizontal rows containing 4 blocks, corresponding to the groups: erosion (Eros); erosion + abrasion (1 Min) and after 30 minutes (30 Min). The appliances were immersed 4 times a day in the drink for 5 minutes. The appliance was placed in the mouth for 1 minute with or without the mouthrinse, depending on the stage. The volunteers then brushed 4 specimens of the row designed as 1 Min with fluoridated dentifrice and placed the appliance into the mouth. After 30 minutes, they brushed 4 specimens of the row designed as 30 Min, and no procedure was performed for the other row (Eros). Analysis was performed by microhardness (%PDS), surface roughness (µm) and profilometer (µm) tests. ANOVA and Tukey’s tests were applied (p<0.05). The % PDS, roughness and wear in enamel were: SB Eros (-80.80%, -0.077µm, 9.30µm); SB 1Min (-76.05%, 0.024µm, 10.70µm); SB 30Min (-70.79%, -0.160µm, 10.82µm); CB Eros (-68.37%, -0.190µm, 8.56µm); CB 1 Min (-69.90%, 0.053µm, 7.13µm); CB 30 Min (-68.31%, -0.136µm, 6.81µm), respectively. Concerning the dentin: SB Eros (-46.09%, - 0.050µm, 8.03µm); SB 1Min (- 35.07%, 0.011µm, 6.75µm); SB 30Min (-40.30%, -0.298µm, 6.13µm); CB Eros (-41.66%, -0.042µm, 5.12µm); CB 1 Min (-41.18%, 0.043µm, 5.68µm); CB 30 Min (-40.06%, -0.030µm, 3.41µm), respectively. The use of the mouthrinse provided a significant reduction in % PDS for the enamel compared to the condition without mouthrinse, besides significantly smaller wear in dentin, regardless of the situation of erosion. The enamel exhibited more wear than dentin, regardless of the study conditions. It was concluded that mouthrinse with ferrous sulfate solution was able to reduce the dental erosion after the use of soft drink and reduce the synergistic effect between erosion and abrasion, both in human enamel and dentin.
