RESUMO

The Knowledge of small watersheds floods and the flood estimative on ungaged watersheds are such that engineering judment still plays an important role in the determination of a design flood. An appraisal of the methods Racional, I-Pai-Wu, Ven Te Chow, U.S. Soil Conservation Service (SCS) Triangular Hydrograph and Regional Synthetic Unit Hydrographs are presented as an aid in developing this faculty. In the first fase were compared the peak flood obtained by applying rainstorms estimated for return periods. After the design estimates based upon recorded rainstorms were compared with observed floods. The synthetics units hydrographs. The effectives were comparised with the observed units hydrographs precipitations, obtained by SCS method and using run-off coeficient, are compared with the observed. This procedure was applied to 131 observed floods. These events took place in 15 small watersheds of São Paulo State-Brazil, in areas from 38 to 398 square kilometers. Histograms and statistics suggest some superiority of the Regional Synthetic Unit Hydrographs, even though the synthetic unit hydrographs obtained by this method is closer of the observed ones than SCS triangular unit hydrograph. The SCS method to obtain the effectives precipitations underestimate the calculated values, while the method that uses the run-off coeficient overestimate. The limitations of methods spelt out by their authors were violated here to explore the versatility of the methods
