RESUMO

Background : The concept of a stationary apex predicts tOOttotal heart volume should be constant during the cardiac cyc1e. Total heart volume invariance was already demonstrated in animaIsbut not in humans. The apex of heart in humans also appears to be stationary. We hypothesized tOOttotal cardiac volume should be invariant in humans. We evaluated the dimensions of the heart during the cardiac cyc1e with two-dimensional echocardiography of 41 nonnal children and adolescents, whose age ranged from Oto 14 years (average of6,15 years). Twentywere females and 21 males. Methods: We measured the perimeter, area and volume in systole and diastole imaging the heart in subcostal 4-chamber view. Results: Our data showed a strong correlation between the parameters in systole and diastole, with indices of correlation of 0.98 for the perimeters and 0.99 for areas and also 0.99 for volumes. Diastolic dimensions were systematica11ylarger by a small amount, 3,55 :t 3,0% ofthe diastolic perimeter, 4,18 :f:2,8% ofthe diastolic area and 6,6:f: 4,2% ofthe diastolic volume. ConcIusion: Our data show tOOt,in normal humans, the volumetric variation of the heart during cardiac cyc1eis also small, and total volume invariance is still tenable
